Luverne is located in southeastern Alabama, approximately 50 miles south of Montgomery and 130 miles north of Panama City, Florida. Founded in 1889, the city is home to a population of approximately 2,800 residents and is the county seat of Crenshaw County. Luverne is billed as the friendliest city in the south and was recently ranked among the top ten small towns in America by ePodunk.com.

Luverne is served by the Crenshaw County School District. The city is also home to Crenshaw Christian Academy, a private Christian school for grades K-2 through 12, and the Luverne campus of Lurleen B. Wallace Community College, a two-year college headquartered in Andalusia.

Luverne is home to a thriving economy driven by a diverse collection of businesses that include numerous entities based in the timber and lumber business. Other major employers include SMART Alabama, a Hyundai supplier that manufactures and supplies parts to Hyundai Motor companies across America, and Sister Schubert’s, maker of baked goods and bread rolls sold in grocery stores throughout the world.

Luverne’s temperate climate provides perfect weather for enjoying the numerous opportunities for outdoor sports and recreation found throughout the area. The city is home to several excellent community parks and recreation facilities that include Turner Park, the Person to Person Sports Complex, and Luverne Country Club. Combined amenities include baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, a nine-hole golf course, swimming pool, and several lakes for boating and fishing. Gantt Lake is located approximately 20 miles southwest of the city. The 2,700-acre recreational reservoir is surrounded by 21 miles of pristine shoreline and features a boat launch, picnic facilities, hiking and biking trails, and swimming beach.

 

The Luverne Historic District features a number of homes and buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sites of interest include the Luverne Post Office and several historic homes that are excellent examples of early to mid-20th century Queen Anne Bungalow and Craftsman-style architecture.

Luverne festivals and special events include the Crenshaw County Rodeo, a PCA sanctioned rodeo event held each June at the Tom Harbin Farm Center, and the annual Peanut Boil Festival, hosted by the Crenshaw County Alacazar Shrine Club each September at Turner Park. Billed as the world’s largest peanut boil, the festival features live entertainment, arts and crafts, children’s activities, a 5-K run, car show, and of course, peanuts – more than 20 tons were sold at the 2015 festival!
